Initially,Muslims in Gravesend prayed in each other’s houses, and would hire halls for
Taraweeh and Eid Prayers. Several forward-thinking men led by Dr Mufti started
the Gravesend & Dartford Muslim Association in 1970, their main aim was to
have a place of worship to pray, learn their religion and come close to their
creator.
It is their self-sacrifice and vision that made it easier for future
generations. We pray that ALLAH SWT
accepts the efforts of all these people, some of whom have left this temporary
world. We pray that ALLAH SWT gives them the reward for all their hard work and
dedication without whom the Association would not exist today.
The local community continued to grow and collect funds for their own premises. After a
lengthy search, in 1992, the opportunity arose to purchase an old Public house
(Albion Arms). The local community raised the money to convert this Public
House into a place of worship – the Gravesend Central Mosque
Since then, there have been a number of extensions and modifications. The Mosque currently has space to accommodate approximately 500 worshippers, including a dedicated ladies prayer room. There are wudu facilities as well as Ghusl facilities on site.
